Life Story for Arthur J. Sherman

Obituary written by his family-
Arthur James Sherman, 98, of New Park, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 15, 2018. He was the loving and devoted husband of Priscilla (Rockwell) Sherman, with whom he shared over 67 years of marriage. Art was born on April 6, 1920, in Grassflat, PA. He was the son of Swedish immigrants, the late Charles and Betty (Gustafson) Sherman.

Art attended Mansfield State College and received his master's degree in psychology at Bucknell University. He was a guidance counselor at York Suburban High School for many years, until his retirement in 1984. He belonged to the Mason Dixon Lion's Club, was a member of the Rehoboth Welsh Choir of Delta, PA, and attended St. James Episcopal Church in Monkton, MD. Art was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan, enjoyed gardening, and loved traveling with his wife.

Art served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, active from April 11, 1943 to January 27, 1946. He was a navigator on B-17s in the 8th Air Force, 381st Bomb Group, 532nd Squadron, stationed in Ridgewell, Essex, England (Station 167) and flew 35 missions over enemy territory. For acts of heroism and extraordinary achievement in the face of battle, he was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In addition to his wife, Priscilla, he is survived by his children, Hannah Sherman of Delta, PA, Thomas Sherman of Dallastown, PA, Carl Sherman and wife Cydney, of Gaithersburg, MD, Ruth Sherman Moore and husband Michael, of Ocean Pines, MD, and Theodosia "Dodi" Sherman Curtis, of Stewartstown, PA; grandchildren, Jesse Collins, Luke Collins, Angela Sherman, Caitlyn Sherman, Ian Heim, Emma Heim, Evan Curtis, and Faelyn Curtis; great-grandchild Grace Collins.
